Mrs. Barker’s Counselor's Corner September Newsletter
My name is Heidi Barker. This is my 4th year as part of the Andrew Avenue Family and I am your child’s school counselor. I truly love being here full time supporting students, parents, and teachers!
I provide a number of different services to support students throughout the school year.
Classroom Social-Emotional Lessons- I will be teaching classroom lessons in all grades that address social/emotional skills, academic success, and the implementation of RULER, our districtwide program for social-emotional development from Yale University.
Small-Group Counseling- Groups run about 3 times each school year on a weekly basis, during the school day and may include topics such as social skills, changing families, anxiety, and school success.
Individual Counseling- Sessions will be provided to identified students. The goal of school-based counseling is for students to develop coping skills & strategies which will help them to work towards overcoming any social/emotional barriers that are adversely affecting your child’s ability to be academically successful in school.

WHAT CAN FAMILIES DO TO HELP IMPROVE ATTENDANCE?
Make getting to school on time every day a high priority.
Talk with your child about the importance of attendance.
Explain to your child the negative effects of absences.
Have a back-up plan for getting your child to school when there are difficulties with transportation, family illnesses, or other challenges.
Try to schedule doctor's appointments for after-school hours.
Contact your child’s school counselor to discuss supports and services that can help your child maintain regular school attendance.

I will be tracking individual student attendance as well as the number of absences in each grade per month. Each grade will be “racing” to see which grade will have the least number of absences until the end of the school year. The grade with the least number of absences will receive a winning prize!

Picture day is Wednesday, October 2, 2019
Our doors open at 8:40 AM students can then enter and go have breakfast. (We have free breakfast and free lunch.) A bell rings at 8:55 AM at which time school officially begins. Our day ends at 3:25 PM. On a half-day, school dismisses at 1:00 PM. Lunch is served on all half days. On ½ days called on account of weather and when all after school activities are canceled the SPARK and YMCA program does not run. Please make sure the school knows how your child/children will be going home on those days.
